Spring is a dangerous time for homeowners and pests. This is because spring insects often invade and cause infestations. The reason why this happens is because spring is when insects awaken from their wintertime slumber. These pests are hungry and looking for food and shelter. They are also looking to breed and multiply! A lot of the time, your home is a perfect source of food. But what are the worst spring insects, and what can you do about this problem?
Wasps are probably the best example of spring insects. These insects are highly active at the start of spring and during summer. The reason why is simply because wasps are one of the few insects that actually die during winter. What happens is that as it gets colder, the drones die. The queen then leaves the nest and finds a safe place to hide during winter. At the start of spring, she begins laying eggs. These then hatch into workers who begin rebuilding the nest. This is not something you want in your home, or on the walls of your house. These workers can number in the dozens, or even hundreds and are extremely aggressive. Spring pest proofing can help.
Cockroaches are another great example of spring insects. You see, as it gets colder, these pests begin something known as diapause. In this state, most of the cockroaches life processes shut down. This enables them to get through the winter with very little food. It also means that they are mostly inactive during this period. This is why dangerous cockroaches often seen to go away when it’s winter. Unfortunately, they have not gone away, they have just slowed down. When spring arrives, these pests wake up and begin a frantic search for food. You’ve probably noticed more cockroaches when it gets warmer. Now you know why.
Ants do not generally go into hibernation, but they do make preparations for winter. What usually happens is that their body temperatures drop. They also become extremely sluggish. Along with this, they prepare the colony. This is done by sealing up exit holes, and burrowing deeper into the ground where it’s warm. Something else that ants do is store food in their bodies. In fact, they actually develop something known as distended gasters. This basically means that they fill their stomachs to the point of bursting. As Winter goes on, they live off of this stored food. By the time it warms up, these pests are desperately hungry and burst out of the colony look for food, and result in people needing emergency pest control. What this means is that one day you’ll have no ants, and the next there will be hundreds marching about.
