Moths can often become a problem in homes. This is especially true if you have something in your home which attracts these pests. This could be food, which draws pantry moths. It could also be clothing made from natural fibres, which will give you clothes moths. But are these the only two moths attracted to our homes, or are there others that you should watch out for?
There are 7 types of moths which cause problems for homeowners in the UK and may require emergency pest control. These include the following:
This is the moth we all know and hate. These types of moths are commonly found in cupboards where clothing is stored. The biggest sign that you have them, is holes in your clothing. Depending on how widespread is infestation is, the best way to eliminate these moths is with pheromone traps.
These moths are similar to clothes moths. The only real difference is that they are mostly found on carpets, instead of cupboards. Despite this, they are just as capable of causing damage to objects made from natural fibres, such as wool rugs.
These moths are similar to clothes moths. That being said, they are not found on clothing as often as the clothes moth. Instead, these moths prefer to feed on dried food, as well as animal waste. They may also be found on rotting food.
These types of moths are also similar to the clothes moth and can be treated with eco-friendly pest control. The only real difference is that they prefer to eat hair, rather than clothing. Another important difference is that these moths are not attracted to pheromone traps, so take note of that.
While similar in appearance to the clothes moth, these pests are not known to feed on clothing. Instead, the white-shouldered house moth feeds primarily on food like grains, pasta, cereals, beans, nuts, spices and flour. They are also known to enjoy chocolates and sweets. Also, just like the brown house moth, pheromone traps are no use.
As the name implies, these pests do not feed on clothing. Instead, meal moths sustain themselves on dried foodstuffs like flour and grains. They are often found in the backs of cupboards where these foodstuffs are stored and they will still infest in winter.
Like the Indian meal moth, these pests only feed on food. While not often found in UK, they are still occasionally sighted. This mostly happens in commercial bakeries and other businesses where food is prepared.
