Pests That Transmit Dangerous Diseases

There are two reasons why some creatures, such as rodents, are regarded as pests. First of all, these pests cause untold amounts of damage. They destroy property, and this must be repaired and paid for. The other more serious reason is because pests transmit dangerous diseases. Many of these conditions are extremely hazardous and can actually be fatal. In fact, illnesses spread by pests kill millions of people around the world. The best example of this is malaria and plague, which still exists. When it comes to pests and diseases, here are some of the worst culprits:

These pests transmit dangerous diseases

1. Rodents

Pests transmit dangerous diseases, and rodents are probably the biggest offenders. Most famously, these pests (in conjunction with fleas) were responsible for the bubonic plague. Rats, mice, and squirrels are also responsible for other viruses and diseases. This includes things like hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, tularemia, and salmonella.

2. Fleas

As we’ve said, fleas were responsible for the spread of bubonic plague. In addition to this, these pests spread dangerous diseases such as the following. First of all, the most dangerous conditions spread by fleas is murine typhus. This condition causes fever and chills, body aches and muscle pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and rashes. If left untreated it can also cause permanent damage to your liver, kidneys, heart, lungs and brain. Fleas are may be hard to get rid of, but it’s important to keep you safe.

3. Flies

Flies are also known for spreading diseases. Why do these pests transmit dangerous diseases? Basically it’s because they feed on and walk across food. You see, these pests are completely covered in bacteria. When they interact with our food, this bacteria is deposited. You then eat this food, and the bacteria ends up inside your body. This can cause serious food poisoning issues, amongst other things and you should always get rid of flies. Fleas can also spread tapeworm to humans. This usually happens when you accidentally ingest them or come into contact with their faeces.

4. Birds

The bottom line is that pests transmit dangerous diseases, birds included. This is why people tell you to never handle a dead bird. It’s also why you should avoid contact with birds as much as possible. Also, NEVER eat anything that a bird has touched. For example, pigeons are absolutely riddled with dangerous pathogens. This includes viruses such as Avian influenza. Then you have fungal diseases like cryptococcosis and histoplasmosis. You also need to watch out for conditions caused by bacteria. This includes things like psittacosis and salmonellosis. Another issue is that they are generally riddled with parasites. A great of example of this are fleas. Often these parasites are spread to humans, who then infect humans with diseases they picked up from birds.
